Forward-deployed engineer

An engineer embedded in the customer's workflow, owning discovery through measured outcome.

In one line

A forward-deployed engineer builds and validates solutions inside the customer's own workflow instead of behind a ticket queue.

DefinitionWhat it means

A forward-deployed engineer works at the customer's side of the problem: they observe the real workflow, find the bottleneck, build and integrate a solution, and stay until the outcome is measured. The role exists because the information a deployment needs most — how the work actually flows, where it actually hurts — lives in the field and does not survive being written into a ticket.

Why it mattersWhy you should care

The role is how AI products cross the last mile: models are general, workflows are specific, and someone has to hold both at once. It is also the origin of the reusable systems everything else builds on — one FDE's field learning becomes the playbooks, evals and kits that let the next deployment start further ahead, which is exactly the shape of the measured kits on this site.

One question separates the roles — whether the requirement arrives written down or is discovered in the field — and it decides who owns the outcome.

The range is asymmetric by design — expert in one or two skills, deliberately competent in the rest — because there is no one to hand off to when a gap appears.

  • Engagement teams where one engineer owns discovery, build and measurement end to end
  • Postmortems where the fix came from watching the workflow, not from the ticket
